Jenkins The Energy Company currently operates out of 20 locations with four additional joint ventures:  Williams Fuel (Tarboro and Wilson, NC), Quality Gas Services (Merry Hill, NC), Jenkins Propane (Pittsboro, NC), and Sandhills Propane Company (Southern Pines, NC). We are ranked 16^th in terms of propane sales of all propane marketers in the United States.  By maintaining over 2,000,000 gallons of strategic bulk storage and two of the largest rail terminal facilities in North Carolina, Jenkins The Energy Company proudly services over 50,000 customers throughout a 50 county area of North Carolina for their energy needs.

In 1944 John D. and Virginia Jenkins opened a furniture store in Maysville, NC. Frustrated by a lack of propane dealers to service the appliances he sold, in 1953, John D. Jenkins opened Jenkins Gas Company and began delivering bottled gas to Jones County and the surrounding areas. Due to growth in 1963 Mr. Jenkins formed a partnership with Robert L. (Bob) Mattocks II, his son-in-law. The following year Jenkins expanded into New Bern and Richlands, NC, and business was lively due to a demand for propane used in tobacco drying. Looking for capital growth, in 1968 one-half interest in Jenkins Gas Company was sold to Tropigas International Corporation. For the next two decades Jenkins grew at a substantial pace adding multiple locations throughout Eastern North Carolina, including its first joint venture – a partnership with Garner Gas Company in Angier in 1976. Many changes also took place within Jenkins Gas Company during the time with Tropigas. In 1974 Bob Mattocks became president of Jenkins Gas Company and served a term as President of Tropigas of North Carolina. As a result, Jenkins Gas Company established a corporate office in Pollocksville to handle the administrative and operational duties of both Jenkins Gas and Tropigas. In 1988 the one-half interest was bought back from Tropigas re-establishing a fully independent, family-owned company. The years in partnership with Tropigas taught those at Jenkins how to operate like a large corporation by utilizing budgeting, forecasting, and marketing while remaining a local company in touch with its customers. Jenkins has continued to grow evolving into its present state, Jenkins The Energy Company.
